Jisun Kim employs unconventional materials such as vinyl, plastic bags, foam, mesh, and edible insect powder to create furniture and objects. Using the hot press forming technique, where the heat generated from the layers of vinyl creates a natural texture, Kim breathes life into synthetic materials. Drawing inspiration from clothing production, she transforms two-dimensional vinyl pieces into three-dimensional sculptures with an architectural aesthetic. Her unique, robust pieces showcase a raw and unpolished sensibility with their distinctive textures. Taking an interest in global environmental issues, Kim began working with discarded vinyl and plastic bags. The artist was dissatisfied with traditional recycling art, which often involves melting discarded plastic and results in uniformity in color and shape. She experimented with various materials and techniques to develop her unique crafting method. The subtle and delicate textures of her pieces exude a calm sensibility, while the muted hues and relaxed lines enhance their visual and tactile appeal. By creating unique beauty with ordinary, ubiquitous materials, Kim highlights the essence of handicraft and sustainability.
