전시 개요
인류는 서로 다른 지역 환경을 받아들이며 문화의 고유성을 형성하였고, 이는 점차 표현의 차이를 만들어내는 창작의 영역으로 발전하였습니다. 2023년 밀라노 한국공예전 ‹공예의 변주›는 한국의 고유한 지역성과 문화성에 집중합니다. 나아가 무언가를 정의함으로 인해 되려 의미가 협소해진다는 무명론 그리고 두 개념의 경계를 허물 때 비로소 사유의 예술이 탄생한다는 유무상생의 동양 관점을 기반으로, 공예의 통상적인 정의와 개념을 ‘변주’하며 우리만의 독창적 미감을 다양한 가능성으로 보여주고자 합니다.
전시는 한국의 지역 특성이 탄생시킨 관점과 기법을 토대로 대한민국 수공 감성의 고유한 선율을 전하는 한 편, 공예 분야의 기존 통념과 법칙에서 해방된 다채로운 변주의 운율 속 내일을 바라보는 시선을 도모합니다. 도자, 금속, 나무, 유리, 옻칠, 낙화 등 다양한 분야에서 활동하는 한국 대표 공예 작가 20인은 열 가지 생각의 방식을 통해 전통에서 전승 그리고 적용에서 응용으로의 가능성을 보여주고 있습니다. 과거의 전통을 토대로 새로운 정통을 만들어가는 긴 여정의 초입에서, 이번 전시가 한국 공예미의 외연을 확장할 수 있기를 기대합니다.
Introduction
Humanity has formed unique cultures by adopting to different local environments, a phenomenon which has gradually developed into a creative sphere that highlights differences in expression. The 2023 Milan Korean Crafts Show ‹Shift Craft›focuses on Korea's unique regional flavor and culture. In addition, based on the paradox that defining something narrows its meaning, and the Asian philosophy that the art of thought is born only when the boundaries between the two concepts are blurred, this exhibition varies the usual definitions and concepts of craft and underlines Korea’s unique sense of beauty in its diverse permutations.
Based on the perspectives and techniques influenced by the regional characteristics of Korea, the exhibition conveys the unique melody of Korean handicraft sensibilities and looks forward to a new future with an assonance of colorful variations freed from conventional artistic wisdom and practices. Twenty of Korea's leading crafts artists working in various fields such as ceramics, metal, wood, glass, lacquerware, and nakhwa pyrography demonstrate the possibilities of passing down and applying traditions through ten thematic categories. At the beginning of a long journey to create a new orthodoxy based on the traditions of the past, we hope that this exhibition will expand the scope of Korean craft aesthetics.

생각의 무게
자연과 함께하며 삶을 찾고, 그 안에서 얻은 철학과 관념을 흙이라는 매체로 표현한다. 자연과 삶이 일심동체 되는 그 지점에서 본질이 드러난다.
Seeking Life
Kwangcho Yoon and Kwangwoo Kim seek life in nature, expressing the philosophical ideas and concepts that arise from it through their use of soil. The essence of their creations thus lies where nature and life become one.
조각들의 결합
작은 조각들은 덩어리를 구성하는 요소 그 이상이다. 조각들을 이어 붙이고 엮어내는 방식을 통해 새로운 차원의 입체 미학이 탄생한다.
Fragment Mesh
Small fragments are more than mere elements that make up the larger whole, as they are attached and woven together to give birth to a new level of three-dimensional aesthetics.
개념의 연결
생각, 재료, 사유, 개념 등 보이지 않는 개념과 요소를 연결해 조형화하는 과정이 전이와 전복의 에너지를 발생시킨다.
Linking Matters
The process of sculpting, which involves linking together materials and intangible matters such as thoughts, ideas, and concepts, generates transformative and subversive energy.
유연한 경계
재료의 가능성을 탐색하는 과정은 모든 것의 시작이다. 고온에서 녹는 과정을 거쳐 변화된 물성은 사물의 경계를 유연하게 감싸고, 태생을 넘어선 낯선 감각을 이끌어낸다.
Fluid Dimensions
It all begins with exploring the potential of materials. The physical properties of the material are transformed as it is melted at a high temperature, encompassing different boundaries and eliciting unfamiliar sensations that go beyond its original form.
표면을 찾아서
사물의 표면은 형태나 구조가 말하지 못하는 비밀을 간직하고 있다. 거칠고 투박한 표면을 섬세하게 연마해 찾아낸 정교한 미감은 고요하게 혁신을 예견한다.
Facade Revelation
The surface of an object conceals a secret that is not apparent in its shape or structure alone. The refined sense of beauty, which is achieved by carefully polishing rough and coarse surfaces, gently hints at innovations to come.
시간의 균형
인간의 감각과 행위가 ‘적절한 순간’을 포착하고, 미묘한 시간의 균형을 잡아낸다. 자연과 인간이 합작한 찰나의 미학이다.
Pause
Human senses and actions capture a timely moment and balance the subtle sense of time. The close collaboration between nature and humans encapsulates beauty in a passing moment.
독창적인 매력
자연계와 인간계를 관통하는 남다른 시선으로, 흔한 장식 하나 없이도 사물의 가장 이례적인 아름다움을, 천상의 비례를 포착한다.
Singular Beauty
With their distinctive viewpoints that allow them to see through the natural and human worlds in a unique way, Bohyung Koh and Suhui Kim express the most extraordinary beauty and heavenly proportions in their objects, devoid of any embellishments.
구조의 융합
각각의 요소를 붙이고 연결해 구조를 구축한다. 이는 전통과 현대, 평면과 입체 등 시대와 관점을 넘나드는 연결고리가 되어 또다시 새로운 구조를 꿈꾼다.
Structural Mergence
Yoonkwan Kim and Shinryeong Kim attach and connect each element to construct a distinctive structure. The end product bridges different times and perspectives, tradition and modernity, as well as two- and three-dimensional forms, inspiring a new structure to be envisioned once again.
불의 깊이
태우는 행위를 통해 불의 흔적을 나무에 머금게 한다. 이는 소멸이 아니라 생성의 단계이다. 그렇게 불이 내는 깊이는 재료의 태생을 뛰어넘어 인간 삶의 깊이로 발현한다.
Flare Remnants
The act of burning leaves behind traces of fire in the wood. This is not a process of destruction, but rather one of creation. The depth created by the flames extends beyond the origin of the material to reflect the profound depth of human life.
경계 없는 시간
세월을 품은 요소들이 특정한 조형 언어와 방식을 통해 동시대에 적용된다. 시간의 구분은 무화되고 ‘경계 없는 시간’의 감각이 펼쳐진다.
Timelapse
Elements that embody the passage of time are brought to life in a contemporary context through a distinctive formal language and method. Time is no longer categorized; rather, a world of boundless time emerges.
