Exhibition Statement

사유의 두께
사유하는 존재로서의 사물
현대 공예는 미술, 디자인 영역과 경계를 흐리며 장르를 자유롭게 횡단하는 새로운 문화 지형도를 만들고 있다. 아울러 경계 사이에 수많은 주름을 새기면서 새로운 장르의 탄생과 미래에 대한 질문을 유발한다. 한국 공예는 타 장르를 순환하면서 재료에 대한 철학적, 인문학적 고찰로 정체성을 재구성해 새로운 문화를 향해 진화하는 중이다. 이렇게 다양한 층위의 사고를 거듭한 한국 공예는 ‘쓰임을 위한 생존의 수단’에서 ‘사유하는 존재의 사물’로서 유의미한 예술로 거듭나고 있다. 전시 파트 1. 《변덕스러운 두께》(In Variation, In Thickness)에서는 한국 예술가들의 사유의 깊이를 들여다 보았고, 파트 2. 《소박 素朴》(SOBAK)에서는 한국의 정서를 대표하는 소박함의 절대 미감을 차의 시간으로 담아내며, 파트 3. 《공존의 마당》(MADANG)에서 한국 전반의 예술에 대한 담론을 펼치는 소통의 장을 만든다.

Thoughts on Thickness
Objects of Contemplative Existence
Contemporary crafts blur the boundaries between art and design, creating a new cultural landscape that freely traverses genres. Moreover, numerous wrinkles are carved between these boundaries to provoke questions about the birth of new genres and the future. Korean crafts, circulating through other genres, are in the process of reconstructing their identity through philosophical and humanistic reflections on materials, evolving towards a new culture. Through repeated layers of diverse meditations, Korean crafts have evolved from a means of survival for utility to meaningful art, as objects of contemplative existence. Part 1. “In Variation, In Thickness,” delves into the depth of contemplation by Korean artists, while Part 2, “SOBAK.” encapsulates aesthetics of simplicity in traditional Korean culture, alluding to the passage of time through tea. Part 3. "MADANG" is a place in which the discourses of Korean art unravel and interact.

Exhibition Composition

파트 1. 변덕스러운 두께
한국 예술인들의 장르를 뛰어넘는 재료에 대한 고찰을 통한 사유의 깊이를 조명하며 다채로운 사유 세계와 깊이에 대해 들여다볼 수 있는 소통의 기회를 마련하고자 한다. 이번 전시는 자연을 대하는 태도(Attitude), 재료의 독창적인 개념(Curiosity), 존재에 대한 고찰(Humanity), 전통적 방법의 재해석(Way of Seeing) 네 개의 키워드를 중심으로 한국의 현대 공예를 관통하는 재료와 기법의 매력을 담았다. 전시에 참여한 작가들이 단순한 재료의 물리적 탐구를 통한 사물의 탄생을 넘어, 어떠한 사회적, 철학적 가치로 작업을 해나가고 있는지를 이해하고, 공감하는 기회가 되기를 바란다.

Part 1. In Variation, In Thickness
By illuminating Korean artists’ reflections on materials that transcend genres, we provide an opportunity to explore the realms of their contemplation and depth. This exhibition encapsulates the allure of materials and techniques in contemporary Korean crafts, centered around four keywords: Attitude, Curiosity, Humanity, and Way of Seeing. We hope to provide the opportunity to explore how participating artists go beyond the mere physical exploration of materials to work with social and philosophical values, to gain understanding and empathy

파트 2. 소박(素朴)
한국을 대표하는 삶의 태도이자 미학적 개념의
“소박 素朴, SOBAK”
한국 공예의 미는 피상적으로 아름다운 오브제를 넘어 그 안에 담긴 삶의 태도를 미학적 개념으로 이해할 때, 비로소 느낄 수 있다. 소(素)는 ‘원래 염색하지 않은 흰 실’을, 박(朴)은 ‘갓 벌채하여 아직 다듬지 않은 통나무’를 일컫는 것으로 인위적 기교가 더해지지 않은 자연스러운 본래의 모습을 뜻한다. 일상에서 ‘소박하다’의 의미는 사치스럽거나 과하지 않은 검소함을 말하지만, 미학적으로는 깊은 자연에 대한 사유의 관점을 담는다. 자연을 곁에 두고 수용의 관계를 맺는 한국의 미의식 속에는 자연과 인간, 그리고 사물의 본질을 탐구하되 비본질적인 것(장식적인 것)을 과감히 절제하는 용기를 내포한다.

Part 2. SOBAK
SOBAK(素朴) - A Representative Attitude Towards Life and Aesthetic Concept of Korea
The beauty of Korean crafts lies beyond the superficial beauty of objects. In understanding the attitude towards life embedded within them as an aesthetic concept, one may truly feel the unique beauty of Korea. “SO(素)” refers to the white thread that has not been dyed, while“BAK(朴)” refers to an untrimmed log freshly cut from the forest, symbolizing the natural and unadorned original form without artificial manipulation. In daily life, “SOBAK(素朴)” implies modesty without extravagance or excessiveness, but aesthetically, it contains a perspective of contemplation towards deep nature. Within Korea's aesthetic consciousness, which embraces nature and establishes a receptive relationship with it, lies the courage to explore the essence of nature, humanity, and objects while boldly restraining non-essential (decorative) elements.

파트 3. 공존의 마당 “MADANG”
소통의 활기
“세계를 연결해 주는 찻자리”
한국의 찻자리는 화려한 도구나 지나친 예의 형식을 떠나 마주한 사물, 사람 자연을 중시하고 대화로 관계를 만들어가는 서정적 장소의 의미로 다가간다. 한옥의 구조에서 마당은 안과 밖을 연결하는 중요한 장소로 바람을 잘 통하게 하고 평소에는 비어있지만, 사람들이 모여 소통을 이룰 수 있는 구조를 이룬다. 이탈리아 작은 정원에서 한국의 마당이 가지는 의미를 담아내 이질적 문화가 조화로움으로 일체를 이루는 공존의 시간을 마련하고자 한다.

Part 3. MADANG (Courtyard of Coexistence)
Vitality of Communication
“A tea garden connecting the world”
In Korean tea culture, the tea gathering transcends extravagant tools or excessive formalities, embracing the significance of a lyrical space where relationships are formed through interactions with objects, people, and nature. In the structure of Hanok, a traditional Korean house, the courtyard serves as a vital space that connects the interior and exterior, allowing for ventilation and remaining mostly empty, yet forming a structure where people can gather and communicate. By capturing the symbolic meaning of a Korean yard in a small Italian garden, we hope to create a time of coexistence where different cultures unite in harmony.

Materials come from nature, and an artist's identity emanates from these materials. Artists convey their stories by personifying and imbuing emotions into materials that inspire them.

존재에 대한 고찰
“1킬로그램의 돌과 1킬로그램의 금 중 어떤 것이 더 가치 있을까?” 작가에게 모든 재료는 소중하고 귀하다. 소외되고 버려진 재료들이 작가의 사유를 통해 새로운 존재로 거듭난다.

Humanity_Contemplation of Existence
“What is more valuable, a kilogram of stone or a kilogram of gold?” To artists, all materials are precious and valuable. Through the artist's contemplation, marginalized and discarded materials transform into new existences.

무기교의 기교_한국공예의 미학
한국의 찻사발은 모양이 투박하지만, 솔직하고 덤덤하여 땅의 기운을 그대로 담아낸다. 흙과 유약 그리고 나무가 뜨거운 불과 만나 형성된 불규칙한 균열에는 자연의 비율, 현대적 마띠에르, 비정형의 긴장이 일체를 이루면서 극지의 아름다움을 드러낸다. 비정형의 미감이 주는 감동은 관습에 얽매이지 않는 아름다움이면서 자연에 순응하는 소박한 마음이다. 이러한 한국의 소박미는 ‘무기교의 기교’ 즉, 기교를 넘어서는 아름다움의 극치를 표현하는 것이며, 이것이야말로 한국이 지향하고 있는 정신적 가치이자 미학의 본질이다.

The Artistry of Simplicity_Aesthetic of Korean Crafts
The Korean tea bowl, may appear rustic, yet it embodies honesty and calm, capturing the essence of the earth. Formed by the convergence of soil, glaze, and wood with the intense heat of fire, irregular cracks reveal the beauty of natural proportions, modernist matière, and organic tension, showcasing the beauty of extremity. The emotional impact of irregular beauty lies in its nbounded allure, with a humble heart that harmonizes with nature. Such artistry in the simplicity of Korean craft represents the pinnacle of beauty beyond mere technique, embodying the spiritual values and essence of aesthetics that Korea aspires to.

관계의 도구_차의 시간
우리는 물질의 풍요 속에 결핍을 상실하고, 아름다움이 홍수처럼 넘치는 시대에 살고 있지만 마음은 그 어느 때보다 빈곤하다. 기술과 속도가 만들어 준 문명의 이기 속에서 우리가 추구해야하는 삶의 지표가 무엇인가 질문을 던지고, 그 답을 찾기 위해 사유의 시간이 필요하다. 익숙한 테이블 위의 차 도구들은 사물과 사물, 사람과 사물의 정서적 관계를 맺어주고, 우정과 연대를 돈독하게 해주는 친밀함의 공예이며, 관계의 도구다. 한국의 차 문화와 차 도구는 자연의 질서와 예술을 일상의 감각으로 연결해 주는 힘이 있기에, 소박함의 정서와 미감을 추구하는 한국의 공예가들과 함께 ‘차의 시간’을 제안한다.

Tools of Relationships_Time of Tea
We live in an era of material abundance and flooded with beauty, but our hearts are deprived more than ever. We require a time for contemplation, to consider the metrics of life to pursue amidst a civilization driven by technology and speed. Tea utensils on the table establish familiarity and emotional connection between objects and people, crafting intimacy that fosters friendship and solidarity. Korean tea culture and its utensils, by connecting the order of nature and art to everyday sensibilities, propose the notion of the 'time of tea' in pursuit of simplicity's sensibility and aesthetics.

사유의 시간_평정의 마음
사유의 시간은 빈자의 여유와 느린 속도를 품은 공간의 세계다. 봄, 여름, 가을, 겨울 등 자연의 이치를 기다려야 했던 선조들의 인내심은 변화를 수용하며 흐르는 사유의 강물을 바라보아야 했다. 같은 이치로 차를 마시는 시간은 느림의 미학을 동반해야 한다. 자연을 마주하고 또한 자신과 자신을 마주하며 마음의 여백을 만드는 시간 -사유하는 존재로서의 사물-

“복잡했던 마음이 사라지는 순백 같은 아침의 마음”

Time of Contemplation_Tranquil Minds
The time of contemplation is a realm of space imbued with the leisure of the recluse and unhurried pace. Ancestral patience, awaiting the essence of nature through the four seasons, teaches us to embrace change and observe the flowing river of contemplation. Similarly, the act of drinking tea should accompany the aesthetics of slowness. It is a time to face nature, confront oneself, and create space within the mind. -as objects of contemplative existence.-

Gardens offer us tranquility and inspiration through the harmony of nature. Relaxing on furniture crafted from tiles, experience moments of flexible artistry, where everyday life becomes an art.
